For Immediate Release:

For Immediate Release

Join Housatonic Valley Health District in celebrating National Public Health Week April 4 through April 10, 2022. National Public Health Week is a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving communities’ overall health and wellbeing.

Housatonic Valley Health District will host a variety of events during National Public Health Week, including kicking off a month-long walking challenge, a virtual Mindfulness Meditation session, and much more.

Director of Health, Lisa Morrissey, notes, “We are excited to offer a variety of programs during this national celebration of public health. This is a great way to show the community how public health affects them and their community. We are thrilled to bring you a Mindfulness Meditation session in order to relieve stress and provide tools to practice mindfulness. We are also excited about our month-long walking challenge where participants will have the opportunity to get involved in their community, walk somewhere they have never been before, and connect with others.”

Prabha Makayee, Mindfulness Meditation leader and educator, quoted, “Mindfulness is a deliberate and voluntary process by which we can reframe our problems and find solutions instead of staying in a perpetual state of cyclical and unending suffering. And we can do all of that in one second, with one thought and one breath. I am excited to bring a Mindfulness Meditation session to Housatonic Valley Health District!”

Walking is a great way to maintain a healthy weight, lose body fat, relieve stress, and promote better sleep. Walking challenge participants will be able to log their daily steps through Pacer for Teams and see how many steps their community has walked. The person with the most steps will be eligible for a prize at the end of the program. There are limited spots available so visit www.hvhd.us/national-public-health-week/ to learn more.

Mindfulness meditation enables people to slow down their minds, focus better, and reduce negative emotions. Join Praba Makayee, an educator and mindfulness leader, as she leads a mindfulness meditation session on April 6 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Google Meets. The Housatonic Valley Health District serves New Milford, Oxford, Southbury, Washington, and Woodbury. The Housatonic Valley Health District’s mission is to create better health outcomes and promote the highest attainable standard of health. It accomplishes this through three principles: prevention, education, and outreach. HVHD prevents disease, injury, and disability for its communities through regular inspections of public and private businesses and homes to ensure conditions exist where people can be healthy. HVHD uses education to inform the public and health practitioners on public health best practices, policy information, and the impacts and methods of prevention for the spread of communicable diseases. HVHD conducts outreach to engage their communities that experience obstacles in accessing the public health services they need, deliver vaccines to the community, and advocate for needed and beneficial health policies.
