HVHD distributing free COVID-19 test kits for residents

For Immediate Release:

As we approach 2023 celebrations, Housatonic Valley Health District (HVHD)  has joined the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) in encouraging residents to get tested for COVID-19.

HVHD has partnered with their participating towns to distribute at-home test kits, which can be picked up from New Milford, Oxford, Southbury, Washington town halls, or Woodbury Senior Center during their business hours within the month of January 2023.

Lisa Morrissey, Director of Health at HVHD, states, “As we are entering the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have more ways to effectively prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes getting tested if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, getting vaccinated, having a COVID-19 plan, and staying informed about COVID-19 within your community. By testing for COVID-19, you could prevent the spread and keep your loved one’s safe and healthy.”

Director Morrissey also noted that the Federal Government has now made four free self-test kits available per household which can be ordered by visiting www.covid.org/tests. CT DPH also has partnered with four federal qualified health centers that offer no-cost COVID-19 testing and treatment including:

  • Charter Oak Health Center Inc, 21 Grand St, Hartford
  • Fair Haven Community Health Clinic, 374 Grand Ave, New Haven
  • Family Centers Health Care, 111 Wilbur Peck Court, Greenwich
  • Southwest Community Health Center, 1020 Fairfield Ave, Bridgeport

The free at-home COVID-19 test kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be picked up at New Milford, Oxford, Southbury, Washington town halls, or Woodbury Senior Center. For information, visit www.hvhdct.gov or call 203-264-9616.

The Housatonic Valley Health District serves New Milford, Oxford, Southbury, Washington, and Woodbury. The Housatonic Valley Health District’s mission is to create better health outcomes and promote the highest attainable standard of health. It accomplishes this through three principles: prevention, education, and outreach. HVHD prevents disease, injury, and disability for its communities through regular inspections of public and private businesses and homes to ensure conditions exist where people can be healthy. HVHD uses education to inform the public and health practitioners on public health best practices, policy information, and the impacts and methods of prevention for the spread of communicable diseases. HVHD conducts outreach to engage their communities that experience obstacles in accessing the public health services they need, deliver vaccines to the community, and advocate for needed and beneficial health policies.
